Competitive Procurement of RE power in Africa, towards increased transparency and greater private sector participation

August 18th-19th, 2021

From 10H.00 to 12H.30 (GMT)

The global trend in renewable energy investment – both in terms of increasing volumes as well as falling prices – is in large part driven by favourable governmental support mechanisms, such as feed-in tariffs (FiTs) and auctions. Furthermore, Renewable energy procurement is increasingly becoming an essential part of a corporate’s energy strategy.
Innovative finance is one of the key solutions to Africa’s energy deficit, for three reasons having to do with how much African governments generate in revenues, how much they spend on extending energy access, and how the energy services are structured to be paid for through end user fees and tariffs. Domestic financing on the continent is on the rise, with finances coming from government budgets, sovereign bonds, and pension funds.
The Africa Renewable Energy Initiative (AREI) is organizing a meeting of knowledge and experience sharing platform on “Renewable Energy Procurement and Financing Mechanisms in Africa”. The main objective of the meeting is to strengthen the capacities of the AREI countries focal points and renewable energy stakeholders across the continent on latest trends in renewable energy procurement as well as the existing traditional financing mechanisms and innovative ones elsewhere that could support effective involvement of private sector mainly local private sector.
